Five Years of Feeding Hope: Celebrating Our Big Kitchen LA’s 5th Anniversary
From a Garage to a Movement
Five years ago, in March 2020, as the world was closing its doors, Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles (OBKLA) opened its heart. What began in Yossi and Chaya Segelman’s garage—packing snack boxes for families struggling during the pandemic—has grown into a thriving community hub where thousands of volunteers gather to cook, connect, and care.
Inspired by the original Our Big Kitchen in Sydney and founded by Rabbi Dr. Dovid and Laya Slavin in 2005, OBKLA was born from the same simple yet powerful belief: when people come together to give, extraordinary things happen.
Five Years of Impact, Thousands of Meals Shared

In just five years, OBKLA has transformed compassion into action—cooking and distributing hundreds of thousands of meals to those facing food insecurity across Los Angeles. In the last year, we held 335 cooking sessions each producing 300 meals, engaging more than 17,000 volunteers and feeding 105,000 people in need. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds have rolled up their sleeves, shared laughter over chopping boards, and found purpose in every dish they prepare.
Each meal tells a story of kindness shared, community strengthened, and hope renewed. Whether it’s a tray of chicken fajitas, a box of cookies, or a warm bowl of soup, every dish represents a moment of care delivered from one neighbor to another.
